This series of ceramic ‘stones’ remembers the unknown stonemasons responsible for the building of the tunnels of the Kennet and Avon canal at Sydney Gardens from 1794 to 1810. All that remains of the identities of these men are the mason’s marks that they left behind to mark their work and so receive payment. Whereas the City of Bath celebrates those associated with power and wealth, those who laboured to build the Georgian City we enjoy today, have sadly vanished into total anonymity.
This work formed part of the group exhibition ‘Play the Museum IV’ at the Holburne Museum, Bath by MA Fine Art students at Bath Spa University.
